How Many Types Of Religions In India ?
Since people of many religions live in India and almost all are associated with some religion. In such a situation, many of you would like to know which are the major religions of India.

Hindu religion has the first place in this list, which originated mainly in India. It is also known as Sanatan Religion.
- Buddhism
According to the 2011 census, about 79.55 lakh people believe in Buddhist religion.
Even though Buddhism is not so prevalent in India but this religion is quite prevalent in East Asia continent. Most of the population of Buddhist religion in India will be seen in the states of eastern India.
- Sikhism
Because a lot of Sikh religion followers are migrating to another country except India. About 1.92 crore people in India are following Sikhism.
This religion is also originated mainly in India. It is believed that Guru Nanak Dev established Sikhism in India in the 15th century. Now you will find their number in other countries of the world too.
- Christianity
According to the last census, about 2.50 crore Indians believe in Christianity and most of their population is seen in South India.
Most people in the world are followers of Christianity, while in India it is present in the third place. If you are thinking that Christians have settled in India during the period of British rule, then it is not so. According to scholars, Christian religion was established in India from the 6th century itself.
- Jainism
Jain Religion was also established in India and their number is in India only. In India, about 42.25 lakh people follow Jainism.
This religion is prevalent all over India even though their number is less than Buddhism but it is spread all over India. Whereas people of Buddhism are seen only in the eastern states of India.
- Islam religion
According to the 2011 census, there are about 14.80 crore Muslim religion believers in India. It is about 14.2 percent of the Indian population.
Islam is the second name in the Indian population after Hindus because the second largest population after Hindus is of Muslim people.
- Zoroastrianism
The population figures mentioned above are from the 2011 census, which has been around 9 years now. In such a situation, there will be an increase in their number currently, whose new report can be seen in 2021.
It is believed that the Zoroastrianism was founded in the 6th century BC. Its founder is Mahatma Zarathushtra, hence it is also called Zarathushtri religion.

In total, there are seven major religions in India with the largest number. Apart from these, about 7 lakh people of India are atheists, meaning that they do not believe in any religion.
